Template talk:Infobox locations

Could I suggests that Infobox_locations:category does not need so many categories. Street and highway could be merged, into one with a type that differentiates, as could probably storage place, point of interest, and maybe house with a sub-type to differentiate. Same with river and lake. — Tilleen (talk) 02:30, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

I totally agree. The 'type' parameter, which isn't currently used, can be used to differentiate the POI, River/Lake, and Street/Highway.

Ok, I will look at this. It think the categories will be:
Category(Type): Biome, City(City, Town), Game World, Road (Highway, Road, Street, ...), Water (Lake, River), Point of Interest (House, Industry, Storage Place, ...).
Should Lake be a biome, although it is not an official biome.

Minor(?) mistake in template[edit source]

First of all, I want to say you are doing an awesome job on the infoboxes, User:Tilleen!

I noticed however, that this template isn't working correctly. Apparently there is a part showing on the pages ( {{#If: ||}} ) when this shouldn't be the case. I had a quick glimpse on the template, but I don't have the knowledge to fix it. Therefore my request to anybody, but User:Tilleen especially to fix this minor mistake.

Thanks for informing me. I thought that I had made sure this wouldn't happen.
Looking into it now.

Version Alpha X NPCs[edit source]

I noticed that when you use any of the confirmed_version, added_version or updated_version, a new category with NPCs in it is added to the page. Is this a mistake? For example on the page Navezgane:

|confirmed_version = Alpha 15
|added_version = Alpha 1
|updated_version = Alpha 15

a category is added to the page saying Version Alpha 15 NPCs, which doesn't make a lot of sense since Navezgane is not an NPC. Perhaps it should just say Version Alpha 15? I'm wondering what your thoughts on this are in particular User:Tilleen and if this can or should be changed? --Hamhock666 (talk) 22:13, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Hamhock666,
You are absolutely correct. That should have been set up to go to Category:Version Alpha 15 Locations, I have corrected this. So it should be good, if you see any issues please tell me.
Thank you very much for this.

Prefabs and Locations.[edit source]

I was thinking about whether we should create validation lists, for the biomes and possibly the categories. Since you are doing so much work with the locations and prefabs User:Hamhock666, I would like your input.

I was also wondering if you were thinking of making a category of Prefab, and listing them independently, on page for each prefab type?

Tilleen (talk) 00:46, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

User:Tilleen, By validation lists do you mean like the auto generated List of Locations but for biomes and other categories? If so, I think that could work if there was other information to associate with biomes besides a description. Right now I feel like a similar thing exists just on the Biomes page which has a list of all the biomes.
What I was doing before was just if a point of interest location had more than one prefab associated with it, I would put a little table in to describe what each prefab was.
What do you mean by making a category of Prefab and listing them independently? Or maybe you mean add a Prefab category on every location with Prefabs? Since every Point of Interest has a prefab associated with it, it would probably be repetitive to have a Prefab category in addition to the Point of Interest category on every point of interest page.
In terms of making a page for every Prefab that is separate from the associated location, I'm not sure how in depth this wiki wants to get. Because while a lot of prefabs are important buildings and points of interest, there are a bunch of prefabs like sign_stop, fence_ctr_nr etc. that dont quite seem like they would be useful as individual pages. While I could definitely see making a page for each prefab, they would likely be short and less useful to readers than larger pages where very similar prefabs are consolidated (like Docks).
Im not sure I quite understood all of your questions, but if there is anything else you want input on or for me to clarify, please let me know.

No, what I meant was the validation for lists that occurs in the items infobox. It has a validation, that checks against a specific list so that if it is not correct, then it will not create a link to that location, but if it does match, it will create a link. see: Template:infobox item and the group field.
I am not sure how deep it wants to get either, especially with Alpha 16 around the corner.
My ideas was to create a page for each prefab, but it is probably not worth it.
Tilleen (talk) 05:30, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, I think it would be useful as it would make anyone coming along and editing a location have an easier time entering the biome or category. Though the thing is with biomes, there ought to be a page for every biome, so perhaps it should just make each entry in the biome category a link whether or not it is a broken link? Unless the biome is Any, so I guess validation lists would work well since there probably won't be a lot of changes to biomes. Maybe they can also be comma separated and the template inserts < br > so that you dont have to type < br > between every biome.
Another thing that I noticed is that pages like Docks that have |rwgmap=N set to No, still are in the category of Random World Generation, which probably shouldn't be the case, for |rwgmap or |navezgane.
We could still do the separate pages for each prefab thing and also keep the consolidated page, if users want to add more in depth information for a distinct prefab building. So we could link to each prefab page from the consolidated page, ex. with Docks have a separate page for docks_01, docks_02... and have Docks link to all of them. Or we could find some way to organize information for each separate prefab on the consolidated page.

I have updated the biomes field so that it now auto-links. It currently removes any <br>, [, ] before processing and adding them back in if necessary. I still have to update the table displays so that it formats them correctly. I am not sure about forcing the break between values.
I have corrected the rwgmap thing.
I was thinking that maybe it would be worth doing the prefabs in a similar way to how recipes are done, have a separate template that would then be searchable in the same way, but not necessarily a separate page for each, because it would mostly be empty and may not actually achieve anything worth while.
