Hello, the wiki is more about in-game information, for support please visit the support page http://7daystodie.com/support/SyphonA1 (talk)

consolidate/add info[]

I noticed that some weapons have effects, but others are referred to as having buffs. Since this page is pretty limited in space and doesn't show buffs, does anyone have a problem with me changing buffs to effects on the appropriate items (or vice versa if that seems more appropriate)?

If I understand it correctly, you are referring to the column called 'effects', while on the infobox of the weapon 'buff' is used. I haven't seen 'effects' been used on the infobox of weapons, but I didn't check them all.
I think the correct terminology for it is 'Buff'. At least it is referred to as 'Buff' in the game files. I am not sure if it is referred to in game and if so, how it is referred to. Anyway, in my opinion it would be best to change the column to 'buffs'

From what I can tell, there are a number of items that have the effects field, it is not however defined for the infobox_item template. I have been changing them to buff when I find them. Since some have multiple buffs, I tried to number them, so the buffchance can be matched, it does however, stuff up this table, so I will probably remove the auto numbering.
I have changed the title to (de)Buff.

Split table in types[]

Due to the awesome work by Scur827 on the list pages, I noticed this table got all kinds of weapons in one big table. Wouldn't it be more useful if the table was split up in different tables for different types of weapons, i.e. Firearms/Ranged, Melee, Explosives/Throwables?

Please share your thoughts!

JonPardon (talk) 22:30, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Well, it is a long list. And it might not be a bad idea, since the information of ranged/melee/explosive weapons would be on the pages of the list of items it's referring to.
And I really haven't done much yet, those were quick and easy changes. The devil's gonna be in the details.
--Scur827 (talk) 22:45, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I don't necessarily agree, I would want to compare the damage ..., of all the weapons, as long as the type of weapon was listed in a column then the list can be sorted so people can find the different types.
There is of course the Group category "Ammo/Weapons" that lists all of these things again anyway.
Also not all weapons have a maximum/minimum damage, eg Dynamite, and other explosives use a single value.
Also where did the figures for the pistol and the like come from? They are not in the .XML any more.
Tilleen (talk) 23:01, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I see where you come from, and I agree you want to be able compare all the weapons. But in my opinion it should also be easy to find, for example, the highest damaging melee weapon. With the current table (even with the types) it is not possible without having to manually compare all melee damage with each other. Or I don't know how to use the table correctly, which is also a great possibility :P. In that case, please teach me master!
---JonPardon (talk) 21:27, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
I am no one's master, but the way that I would do it, is to sort by the field that you want to compare, and then find the first or last of the type that you are interested it. It would be better if there was some way of filtering as well as sorting, but I don't think that, that is possible.
Of course, there is no reason why (maybe space and performance) we can not have a separate page for a list of "Melee" weapons...., although it may become a bit much if there are too many different categories to be independently displayed.
Tilleen (talk) 03:16, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
Normally if you wanted to see the highest damaging melee weapon, you select multiple columns. It will sort the existing order by whatever column you choose multiple times. It goes like this...
The list starts off sorted in alphabetical order. I would re-sort everything by damage. Now everything is sorted by damage, but anything with the same damage is in the same order as it was before, alphabetically.
Next I would re-sort by type. Now the list is sorted by type, and anything of the same type is still sorted by damage, and if the type and the damage is the same, it's alphabetical.
I could continue this as much as I like. The problem here is that not all melee weapons are the same type, not really. Some are "Mechanical, Melee", some are "Manual, Melee", and so forth. "Mechanical" and "Melee" have been assigned to one variable as one value, instead of two. Fix that, and you can sort in all kinds of neat ways.
edit: I remember running into this problem in the past, but it's been a long time, before the internet even. I think I used set/select to work around it.
--Scur827 (talk) 04:14, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, the merging of the "Mechanical, Melee" back in to a single field was my fault, I could not stand having another field just for tools when everything else uses the type field subclassification. I can undo it if necessary.
Whether the clicking on multiple columns to get the appropriate sort or not depends on the sort algorithm used, and it definitely seems to work in this case, although that may change based on the browser that people are using.

I think we could have the best of both worlds, no? We can have this list as a "master list" of all weapons and we can have separate pages with lists broken down by other useful criteria, such as the weapon type.

I also think this table is too wide and that could be a nit-noid issue on my part, but I think a large table like this (large in number of columns as well as rows) could be condensed by only including columns of data common to all weapons. i.e. don't include *magazine* or *Stamina Usage* as neither are common to all weapons. We can add a paragraph at the top of the list explaining that it's a general list of all weapons and to compare unique attributes, readers should see the sublists.

To me, these lists are extremely handy for comparing like items and if I wanted to compare all melee weapons against each other, it would be hard to do with this "noisy" list (that's not a dig, just an observation). I imagine this table would be useful for someone wanting to know everything that can be used as a weapon and then from there, dig into a new list for more details.

We'll also find as we work on these lists, that the data is outdated. Just poking through this list I see that max entity damage and I think min and max durability are inaccurate for many items. I'll start working on correcting that data per-page.

This is probably the way to go. The issue of comparing guns is that some are different types then others, so you'd need to include the category field as well so you can click on firearms if you want to compare all guns, since once those pages are created they'll turn into links. I like the idea of dropping all the gobbly-gook, just have the name, category, type, and whatever else seems appropriate.

"--Scur827 (talk) 04:58, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

In that case do we create multiple pages:
  • List of Semi-automatic
  • List of Melee
  • List of Bolt Action
  • .....
Or just have different tables on the one page. I personally do not really see any point to the different types of ranged weapon types, I would only be interested in Melee and Ranged, especially since I only ever use the bow (currently).
I would drop these fields: Block Damage (these are weapons not tools), may be durability because its value is meaningless at the moment, Repaired with.
I would add in (maybe for specific tables) the other damage field (generally used for explosives), and may be the confirmed_version field so you can see if the data is up to date.
Tilleen (talk) 22:54, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
I have done some clean up as per discussion.
Currently, removed the block damage, put in the base and max entity damage, with combining of the fields if they are the same. Does not sort well because I have added in things link 3 * 9 for the shotguns which makes it a text sort, not a numeric sort. I was going to have it evaluate the expressions so that the comparisons it would choose a value (rather than the text string), but the auto-linking I placed else where confuses this.
I have done similar for the range as well, and this sorts well, but I am not sure that I like it.

Candy Cane Shiv[]

Found a "Candy Cane Shiv" in-game on 27 Dec 2018. Not on the wiki, thought I would share.

Item Lv: 2 Melee DMG: 16 Power ATK DMG: 32 Block DMG: 5 Power ATK Block DMG: 10 Stamina Cost: 14 Attack/Min: 52 Max Durability: 60

Weapon lists[]

I started to wonder, after looking at the melee weapon list, whether it is necessary to list all the different tool as well. First reason is that they are not commonly used as a weapon so people don't do anything with the additional information given to them. Second reason is that people looking for information about tools most likely go to the Tools-section of this wiki, not weapons. The information here is mostly covered there too, apart from the entity and block DPS (the latter being quite surprising, because we are still talking about tools). So I suggest removing tools from the list of melee weapons and possibly ranged weapons too (with the nailgun there). The chainsaw and auger can be left, mainly because it is quite possible that people wonder about their capabilities as a melee weapon because of their late-game appearance.
GaKo (talk) 16:12, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

While I do see your point, some people do use tools as weapons. In fact, there is an book series dedicated to improving the melee combat ability of axes.--Peterjohn197240611 (talk) 16:25, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
