Overview[ | ]
The Pump Shotgun is a pump-action firearm that can be found/looted or crafted in 7 Days to Die. The Shotgun can use either Shotgun Shells or Shotgun Slugs as Ammunition and when empty will reload automatically or manually using the reload key (default key 'R').
Combat[ | ]
In close combat situations, the Pump Shotgun is tremendously powerful and deals a high amount of damage to enemies. It has a slight spread of the shot which allows the Weapon to hit multiple targets at once; a shotgun choke may be attached to tighten the buckshot spread, reducing spray but concentrating the damage per shell. Alternatively, a sawed-off shotgun barrel may be used instead to achieve the opposite effect, increasing spray to hit more targets; the duck bill attachment changes the spread to a more horizontal pattern. The damage is calculated if all the 8 pellets hit.
A major drawback for the shotgun is the low ammo capacity, particularly due to its use for close range combat. Players should be mindful of the remaining ammo in the tube, as while the shotgun is powerful, players can be caught off-guard while clearing buildings and tight spaces. As well, using buckshot to hunt animals may damage the carcass, diminishing the amount of resources harvested from the animal.
Players that intend to use shotguns as their primary weapon of choice should invest their skill points in the Strength attribute and upgrade the Boomstick perk. The Shotgun Messiah books will also benefit shotgun users.

The recipe above contains the Resources/Magazines needed for each Quality level of the Pump Shotgun.
A higher Quality item may provide better stats at the cost of increased material and unlock requirements.
Repair[ | ]
The condition of a Pump Shotgun deteriorates with each use until eventually it will stop working and will need to be repaired. This can be done using a Repair Kit. A single repair kit is enough to restore the weapon to full durability.
Recommended Mods[ | ]
Image | Name | Affected Part | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Muzzle Brake Mod | Barrel | Reduces recoil. | |
Barrel Extender Mod | Barrel | Increases damage, range and aimed accuracy at the cost of stability when fired from the hip. | |
Silencer Mod | Barrel | Decreases firing sound while reducing range and damage. | |
Sawed-Off Shotgun Barrel Mod | Barrel | Increases projectile spread. | |
Shotgun Duckbill Mod | Barrel | Modifies projectile spread to a horizontal pattern instead of the normal round one. | |
Shotgun Choke Mod | Barrel | Tightens projectile spread. | |
Cripple Em Mod | Crippling | Adds a chance to cripple a leg on a bipedal target. | |
Fore Grip Mod | Grips | Improves handling and accuracy when firing from the hip or moving. | |
Shotgun Tube Extender Mod | Magazine | Increases magazine capacity of Pump Shotguns. | |
Reflex Sight Mod | Scope | Minor visual magnification but designed for fast target acquisition. | |
Weapon Flashlight Mod | Side | A portable light source. | |
Laser Sight Mod | Side | Helps with aiming quickly and increases accuracy when firing from the hip. | |
The Hunter Mod | Special Damage | Increases damage to all animals. | |
Rad Remover Mod | Special Damage | Temporarily disables regeneration ability of radiated zombies. | |
Retracting Stock Mod | Stock | Improves weapon handling while firing from the hip. |
Shotgun Auto Turret[ | ]
The Shotgun is not required to craft shotgun turrets, saving the player the time, effort, and/or resources of acquiring another Shotgun.
Notes[ | ]
- The Pump Shotgun is originally based on the Mossberg & Sons 500A Field Gun, which was used by most of the police forces.
- The Pump Shotgun, like all weapons, can destroy blocks and structures.
- It has a smaller shot spread than the Shotgun Sawed-Off barrel mod.
- The Shotgun's reload animation only shows two shells being reloaded, despite the weapon's capacity of ~8 shells.
